Instructions (All Applicants)
- Complete the online CESSI Application Form below. Please fill in all the information requested and then click “Submit” at the bottom of the page.
- Submit a personal statement of research and/or career plans. In your statement, explain how the acquisition of a Central Eurasian language will further your goals. The recommended length for your statement is 1-2 pages, double-spaced. Statements should be submitted by email to cessi@creeca.wisc.edu.
- Submit transcripts (official or unofficial) from all institutions of higher education that you have attended. Email transcripts to cessi@creeca.wisc.edu or mail paper transcripts to the CREECA office. If you have attended CESSI in the past, please submit those transcripts as well.
- Submit a copy of your CV/Résumé.
- Pay the non-refundable application fee of $25.00. Submit the application fee to CREECA by check or money order payable in U.S. Dollars made out to UW-Madison/CESSI. If you are outside the U.S., please contact the CESSI program coordinator for alternative payment options.
The priority application deadline to be considered for a Title VIII Fellowship is February 1, 2019.
FLAS fellowships are awarded through a separate competition, and applications are due in mid-February, 2019. Additional instructions for the Title VIII Fellowship, FLAS fellowship, and fee remission applications are below.
After the priority deadline has passed, CESSI will continue to accept applications on a rolling basis for those courses which have confirmed enrollment. Please contact the CESSI coordinator for more information.

Title VIII Fellowship Applicants
In addition to the above, please also have two letters of recommendation submitted on your behalf. Current students should submit letters of recommendation from professors or instructors; professionals and scholars may submit letters of recommendation from employers or other individuals who can speak to the applicant’s aptitude for languages and interest in Central Eurasia. Letters must be on the recommender’s official letterhead and can be mailed or emailed as a PDF to cessi@creeca.wisc.edu. Mailed letters must have the recommender’s signature over the seal of the envelope and should be mailed to the CREECA address; emailed letters must be sent directly by the recommender.
Title VIII applicants must also submit an additional statement of purpose for the fellowship. In this statement, describe a) your commitment to continued study of the languages and societies of Central Eurasia, and b) how your academic and career plans will further Title VIII’s mission of developing and maintaining U.S. expertise on the Central Eurasian region. The recommended length for your statement is 1-2 pages, double-spaced.
FLAS Fellowship Applicants
FLAS applicants must complete a separate application at flas.wisc.edu.
Fee Remission Applicants
